So this young guy the other night asks me why I bought an S1000RR. I told him that I wanted to buy the BEST motorcycle on the face of the planet... He looks at me strange and tells me that he works at a local (Japenese of course) bike shop and goes on to try and argue that the ZX-10 is a superior bike. WOW! I haven't met a Kowie fan in quite a long time let alone one that thinks it's better then a BMW...

I planned these mods to occur over a year, but I just got on a roll and finished it in just three months. Oh well :) There are a few things I can still think of (like BST carbon fiber wheels with Braketech carbon disc rotors, $6500 including tires, jeebus), but the cost is essentially prohibitive.

Most of the weight lost was by hacking off the stock exhaust box - that thing weighs a TON.

Let's see if I can remember everything I did:

Carbon fiber:
alpha Racing swingarm and frame covers
alpha Racing sharkfin chain protector
triple clamp cover
Slingshot Racing rear plate holder
Ilmberger rear hugger/chain guard
Febur Italia alternator cover

Sliders and chassis:
MRA windscreen
Woodcraft frame sliders
R&G fork sliders
custom rear axle sliders
Yoshimura engine case protectors
Attack Performance rearsets
Evoluzione quick-release seat pegs (seat can be pulled off instead of having to unscrew the damned thing)
CRG clutch lever

Aluminum doodads:
Yoshimura oil plug
Yoshimura inspection port plug
Yoshimura axle blocks
Gilles titanium locking axle nut
Valtermoto triple clamp nut
Motovation vibration-damping barends (they actually work)

Lighting and bodywork:
Austin Racing carbon fiber bellypan (WSBK race-spec)
55W HID H7 bulbs (both sides)
LED parking lights (both sides)
BMW LED rear turn signal stalks
Tecbike flushmount front LED turn signals
Custom LED load resistors (for the front turn signals)
Triboseat pillion seat cover

Performance:
customized Austin Racing AR-CS midpipe system
STOCK muffler can
Dynojet Power Commander V
Dynojet Autotune module

Brakes:
Brembo M4 monobloc calipers
Galfer G1375 race pads
Complete set of Galfer brake lines
Brembo RCS19 master cylinder w/short brake lever

miscellaneous:
rear luggage bag
front tank bag

need to dyno it, but from the map I'm running (developed for a BSB racer using the same exhaust midpipes as me), a fair guess is over 210bhp. The bike is lighter, and full throttle is literally terrifying in Slick mode, and I've got a pretty good stomach for mad acceleration.

I haven't considered Ohlins suspension or steering damper because frankly, the stock Sachs suspension has been more than good enough so far. But I suppose if I had to take it one last step, that would be switching to Ohlins, and the aforementioned BST carbon fiber wheels. And I have yet to experience a single moment where I felt the stock steering damper to be inadequate, and I am very picky about steering dampers.

This bike has completely ruined me for any other bike on earth. Everything I've ridden has been uncomfortable, hard to shift (I no longer know how to properly shift a bike due to the quickshifter), and way too soft. My last ride was on a G650X loaner, and I literally felt I was riding a $500 bike. Ducatis, although light, do not have the solid feel that this bike has - the S1000RR feels like the entire bike was milled from a single billet of aluminum. I've already learned that I hate GS bikes, although it occurred to me a few days ago that if an R1200GS had much lower bars, maybe even clip-ons, I'd feel more comfortable on one.

Ah. I do need to do a tire pressure monitoring system, and heated grips. I'm stuck on the latter as I really want to keep the stock grips. I'm also mulling over a LiFePO4 battery as well (would save quite a bit of weight). Ok, maybe I'm not done yet...but I'm very close :p

The bike is exactly where I wanted it to be though, performance and appearance-wise. It sounds mean as hell, with a much lower rumble than you'd expect (that's why I stayed with the stock can - I figured the stock muffler, geared more towards muffling, would give it a deeper sound than other shorty systems, and I was right, as it turns out. Get over 9000rpm however and the bike still has this perfect wail like an F1 car.

Going on a big BMW Korea-sponsored weekend ride next week. Time to start riding this thing seriously :) The perfect bike is different for different people; this one, I've found, is exactly THE perfect bike for me. True it's a superbike, but I've never felt the slightest hint of neck or back pain or even strain. My wrists will tire if I forget to use my thighs properly. And as much as I loved my Bumblebee F800S, this bike carves out corners that used to scare me on the F800S, carves them like it's on rails.

I'm set with my bike. No lust for any other bike in existence. I'm in love and the bike loves me back with astonishing handling that makes me look five times better than I actually am, and so much power that I can rarely if ever find a place to use it. Even during the most aggressive street riding, I have more than enough power and torque to stay under 9000rpm. Best. Bike. Ever. And the exhaust and Power Commander mods have only made it smoother yet more powerful.

it has always seemed somewhat odd that BMW put the cheapest radial Brembos, yet braking performance has been claimed to clearly outshine all other current superbikes.

So if they're that good, what if you upgraded?

Could have (and should have) bought new, but I got these used, sourced off a Ducati 1198. See other thread for fitment problems, but the calipers themselves were plug and play. I now have Galfer brake lines installed. They're more flexible (when you handle them) than stock (you can't coil up the stock brake lines, they're far too stiff), but I guess the name means quality. I didn't have a choice - I needed the banjos to line up, and the stock banjos don't fit the M4s that come factory standard on various superbikes.

With the stock units off, I was able to compare the two. The stock units aren't as small as they appear. It's just that they are in two halves, the halves don't mate up (this apparently does not affect performance) and monoblocs are simply more bling.

Sorry for the crap photos but this is all I've got at the moment:

waiting for a nice dry day to really test these out. They're amazing on the Ducati 1198S; hope they improve things on my bike as well. A Brembo RCS19 M/C is on its way, and then I'll call it a day.Wish I could find (and mount) the rear caliper from the HP2 Sport, but that's a unique part that doesn't show up too often.

Just finished putting in HID's from Hardracing.com (excellent service & shipping) as a 2 light install. Pretty well a "plug & play" with the exception of drilling out the back covers of the lights to fit the water tight grommet. I mounted the ballasts and the like in the inner fairing underneath the light housings for more water resistance and horizontal placement. The kits come with a resistor which works in conjunction with the canbus system to ensure no flickering or fault codes will come into play. What a difference !!!! Bye the bye, crimping of the brass flanges in the housing is needed to secure the bulbs. All pics are with the Iphone 4 (props to Mr. Jobs)

I've been riding now for about 3 years with an Arai "Vector" helmet and I'm thinking about picking up something new. Not that there's much wrong with my current helmet, but there are a couple things that I'd like to change. Not being about to remove and wash the inside padding is starting to kinda piss me off. Virginia summers are a little hot and I've sweated a bit inside mine. So, I was wondering if anyone out there either owns or has somewhat of an educated opinion on the carbon fiber helmets on the market.
